Oven care advice

How often should you get your oven professionally cleaned?

A well-kept oven is easier — and cheaper — to keep brilliant.

I get asked this all the time, and I’m going to give you an honest answer rather than a sales pitch: it depends on how you cook. There’s no single schedule that suits every household, so here’s how I guide my customers across Selwyn and Christchurch.

The weekly roasters: every 6 months

If your oven does a roast most weekends, plus weeknight baking and reheating, grease builds up fast — on the cavity walls, the glass, the racks and the seals. A professional deep clean every six months keeps it from ever reaching the “too far gone” stage, stops smoking and funny smells, and keeps the oven running efficiently. Most of my regulars in Rolleston, Hornby and Christchurch are on roughly this rhythm.

Average family cooking: once a year

Dinner most nights, a roast now and then, occasional baking? An annual professional clean is plenty. In between, wipe spills once the oven is cool and give the glass a go with a damp cloth — little and often stops layers building into concrete. Book the annual clean before winter, and your oven will sail through the heavy roasting season.

Light users: every 18 months to 2 years

Mostly reheating, the odd pizza, more benchtop-appliance cooking than oven cooking? You can stretch further. But don’t leave it forever — even light use leaves residue on seals and glass, and neglected seals are what let heat (and money) escape.

Signs yours is overdue now

Smoke when you roast. A door you can’t see through. Smells that transfer between dishes. Visible black build-up on the floor or walls. Any one of those means stop waiting — and whatever state it’s in, don’t be embarrassed. The burnt-to-brilliant photos on my home page are ovens far worse than yours, and their owners all got the same friendly service. Ring 021 054 4661 for an honest quote.
